The Effects of Guided Imagery on Stress, Heart Rate Variability in Nursing Students
Kim Hyo-Kyoung

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of guided imagery on Stress, Heart Rate Variability(HRV).

Method: The participants in this study were sixtynine(36 for the experimental group, 33 for the control group). The guided imagery was provided through audiotape to experimental group, 8 minutes per day for 2 weeks at classroom. Stress and HRV were measured at the beginning and end of the experiment.

Result: Stress was not significantly different between the two groups. All indices of HRV except Low Frequency(LF)/High Frequency(HF) ratio were significantly different between the two groups. Normalized LF(LF norm) in the experimental group was significantly lower than in control group, and Normalized HF(HF norm) in the experimental group was significantly higher than in control group.

Conclusion: The results indicate that guided imagery is a helpful intervention for decreasing LF norm, increasing HF norm, which were physiological predictor variables of stress.
